Airport lights are going out all over Europe

Eurelectric Sec Gen Kristian Ruby on how Europe needs to prepare for a post-Ukraine time of energy threats

“ We don't know who's behind [the Heathrow outage and an oil terminal in Norway yesterday]. We don't know exactly what happened, but I think that the basis here is that there are too many of those for them to be a string of very unfortunate events.

And in particular when, for instance, we examine what's going on in the Baltic Sea, where we see. Time and again attacks against, uh, pipelines, uh, digital infrastructure, electric cables, et cetera. We just say there's a pattern here and that we need to react to that.”

Kristian Ruby, Secretary General of Eurolectric, shares insights from his recent visit to a Ukrainian power plant operating under war conditions. Ruby discusses the resilience and ingenuity of Ukrainian engineers maintaining energy infrastructure despite frequent bombings, the importance of Europe's preparedness for similar scenarios, and the necessity for robust energy infrastructure and cybersecurity. The conversation also covers the strategic shifts required in Europe's supply chain and critical infrastructure ownership, emphasising closer cooperation with the authorities and increased vigilance against sabotage and other threats.
